Investigating One Dimensional Motion

Investigating One Dimensional Motion

Students can investigate one dimensional motion students can use many tools including a measuring and timing devices.

Measuring Average Velocity

To determine average velocity, you can use a meter stick as a measuring device and a timing device.

Determine how far in a direction the object moved and the time it took to get there.  Then use the average velocity equation you see here.

v equals x divided by t

The seconds count timing app is a very useful tool to determine time from taking a recording.

See how to use this app in our video

Determining Average Acceleration

The equation you see here is useful to determine the average acceleration of an object.

Initial velocity (vi) would be zero if starting from rest.  Time (t) and displacement (x) can be measured.
